greggles Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 I have a galaxy TDI115 BV6 and the gears crunch into second and third on the way up when cold.Anybody have any ideas ? is this serious ? Quote
tim-spam Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Apparently, some do and it's not considered to be a problem so long as it's not too bad and doesn't do it when hot. Quote
greggles Posted January 4, 2006 Author Report Posted January 4, 2006 Thanks for that, it doesn't seem too bad although its annoying cos you tend to change the gears slower from 2nd to third.... Quote
El Dingo Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Here's a tip from previous experience with VAG gearboxes... Have you recently aquired the vehicle? I'm told by my source at Audi that these gearboxes are especially prone to second gear crunch when new, or when driven by a new driver in a different 'style'. The best advice is to ignore it and the crunch goes away after a while. :( This worked with two of my cars, one a Seat 6 speed and one an Audi 6 speed (my current 'other' car). At your own risk though... ;) Quote
greggles Posted January 5, 2006 Author Report Posted January 5, 2006 cheers El , I bought it second hand recently with 86000 Km on the clockI'm just not sure wether the previous owner was too a bit too brutal with the old gear changes............. Quote
Jeff115 Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Greggles,I too have 'clunk' going up into second, but not down :P , when cold and scrunch going up into third, unless revs are kept low, whether cold or hot. IMO it's a design fault / weak box - mine's only got 32k miles on the clock and I've had it since 9k. The best advice is to ignore it and the crunch goes away after a while El D - I can't see worn baulk rings / synchro 'going away' though scruncing can be managed by keeping revs low. Some have suggested replacing gear oil with ATF - this may help but i'd anticipate an eventual required gear overhaul. :D Regrds,J. Quote
El Dingo Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 El D - I can't see worn baulk rings / synchro 'going away' though scruncing can be managed by keeping revs low. Nothing to do with revs... The advice was just to drive like normal. That's what I did, and the crunch went away. I'm a mechanical engineer and I can't explain it... Quote
El Dingo Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Actually I can, now I've had my supper.Synchro cone accelerates the gear to match speed with adjacent shaft. Different driving styles can create a different wear pattern. This does not apply to knackered synchro cone. Quote
Jeff115 Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Hi folks, I'm going to change my gear oil to Millers TRX Synth 75w90 to avoid occasional 3rd gear scrunch using this lighter synthetic oil (subject to Millers clarifying that this synthetic gear oil is OK per the Ford spec.). Has anyone else changed their transmission oil to fully synthetic oil? Do you change your gear oil and if so how ofter?Regrds,J. Quote
shmattins Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 Hi folks, I'm going to change my gear oil to Millers TRX Synth 75w90 to avoid occasional 3rd gear scrunch using this lighter synthetic oil (subject to Millers clarifying that this synthetic gear oil is OK per the Ford spec.). Searched on the topic 'Crunching Gears' (so this thread is a little old) as my Galaxy crunches from 2nd to 3rd. Just had a new Clutch fitted at Nationwide Autocentres last week for Quote
ncb Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 I'm going to change my gear oil to Millers TRX Synth 75w90 to avoid occasional 3rd gear scrunch using this lighter synthetic oil (subject to Millers clarifying that this synthetic gear oil is OK per the Ford spec.). Has anyone else changed their transmission oil to fully synthetic oil? Ive read on another forum that has 33 pages of discussion on this. Apparently VAG have released about 6 updates of gear oil in as many years to cure these problems. Apparantly 75w90 is too thick and you need a GL4 gear oil. I need to fix this problem ASAP but am toiling whether to use the updated gearbox oil from volkswagon pn G052171a2 or use something like Redline MTL supposidly designed to address the crunching gear problem (NOT redline MT-its thicker). ncb Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 Mine was just a hex head that i ha as part of a cheapo laser kit of 5 bits. Not sure about buing it from hellfrauds but just using the link to show you the picture. Usefull bit of kit as you get 10 sizes for a cheap price. No spline keys tho Quote
Mirez Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Yeah see thats what my 2001 galaxy had, this one is that weird and wonderfull antitamper plug. Hey-ho, ordered one and the oils in at the dealer so guess I have an evening job to be done :( Quote

Hey-ho, ordered one and the oils in at the dealer so guess I have an evening job to be done ;) And to bring this back to the top, wow. The old oil was quite knarly looking, with a slight residue of something floating on top. After the change it was noticeably smoother and a little quieter but this morning was the real test - from cold the VW box has always been a little.. well er, crap. Both my Mk2's (125K and 65K) have been crunchy and difficult when cold but this morning it was smooth and effortlessly went into gears without the normal "breakfast crunch" :) This is a highly recommended service! 052171A2 D2 Gearbox Oil x3 @ 12.87 = Quote
ncb Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 MIREZ did you need 3 ltrs? how much did you need to put in? Quote
Mirez Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 My only concern for NCB is that mine took 2.6 liters, the official capacity is 2.5 liters so if you only put 2 in yours then you are a little short!!! :) 2.6 Liters mine took Quote
ConnorBoy Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) My 2002 Galaxy has the same crunch in 2nd and 3rd going up the gears. Going for an oil change this week after reading the above posts. Just had the sump shield (undertray) off earlier. I've got the tamper proof drain and fill plugs also. Quick search on ebay and Draper do the socket, part number 63476, cost £5.99 + P&P. I'll let you know the result. Fingers crossed its the same as MIREZ!!!!! :( Sourced the oil through Ford - got the VAT knocked off so not too bad a price - £15.50 / litre. Ford spec and details for the oil: 70W - 75W SG6 VYM2J 7H466 BAFord Specification N052171 VX00 Edited April 19, 2011 by ConnorBoy Quote
